VA to Amps Formulas

  • Single Phase : For single phase systems, you can use the following formula: \[ \text{I} =\frac{\text{S}} {\text{V}} \]

    Example Calculation :- Suppose we have a single phase AC circuit with an RMS voltage of 230 V and an apparent power rating 3000 VA. The single phase current is calculated as follows:

    \[ \text{I} =\frac{\text{3000}\text{VA}} {\text{230}\text{V}} = \text{13.04} \text{A} \]

    Therefore, the RMS current in this single phase is 13.04 A.

  • Three Phase: For three phase systems, the formula is slightly different due to the √3 (square root of 3) factor in three phase power calculations. The formula is:
    *For line to line voltage
    \[ \text{I} =\frac{\text{S}}{\sqrt{3} \times \text{U}} \]

    Example Calculation :- Suppose we have a three phase system with a line to line voltage of 400 V and apparent power rating 3000 VA. The three phase with line to line is calculated as follows:

    \[ \text{I} =\frac{3000 \text{ VA}}{\sqrt{3} \times \text{400} \text{ V} } = \text{4.33}\text{ A} \]

    Therefore, the rms line current in this three phase system 4.33 A


    *For line to neutral voltage
    \[ \text{I} =\frac{\text{S}}{\text{3} \times \text{V}} \]

    Example Calculation :- Suppose we have a three phase system with a line to neutral voltage of 230 V and an apparent power 3000 VA. The line current is calculated as follows:

    \[ \text{I} =\frac{3000\text{VA}}{3\times 230\text{ A}} = \text{4.35}\text{ A} \]

    Therefore, the line current in this three phase system is 4.35 A.

International System of Units - \( S \): Apparent Power in volt-amperes (VA).
- \( U \): RMS Voltage in volt represents the L-L voltage.
- \( V \): RMS Voltage in volt (V) represents the L-N voltage.
- \( I \): RMS Current in amperes (A)
- \( √3 \): This factor (approximately 1.732) accounts for the relationship between line voltage and phase voltage in a three phase system. It ensures that the calculation correctly reflects the distribution of power among the three phases.
