To convert amps (A) to watts (W), you need to know the voltage rating, current rating and power factor (PF). Use these formulas for quick conversions from amps to watts. Here are the formulas:

General Formula

  1. DC Formula : : The formula to convert Amps to W in a DC system is:
      \[ \text{P} = {\text{V} \times \text{I} } \]
  2. Single Phase: : The formula to convert Amps to W in a single-phase system is:
      \[ \text{P} = {\text{V} \times \text{I} \times \text{Cosφ}} \]
  3. Three Phase: The formula to convert Amps to W in a three-phase system is:
    • Calculation with line to line voltage
    • \[ \text{P} = {\sqrt{3} \times \text{U} \times \text{I} \times \text{Cosφ}} \]
    • Calculation with line to neutral voltage
    • \[ \text{P} = {\text{3} \times \text{V} \times \text{I} \times \text{Cosφ}} \]

Unit of Measurement:

- \(P\): Active Power is measured in kilowatt (W).
- \(V\): is the rms voltage in volt (V) represents the line-to-neutral voltage.
- \(U\): is the rms voltage in volt represents the line to line voltage
- \(I\): is the rms current in amps represents the line current in the system.
- \(Cosφ\): Power Factor

Practical Examples

  • DC :- If you have a power supply for LED lighting it's current rating 33.3 Amps and operate on voltage 12 volts.
    \[\text{P} = {33.3 \times 12} = 399.96\text{ W} \approx \text{400} \text{ W} \]
  • Therefore, the active power in this calculation is 400 W

  • Single Phase :- If you have a water pump it's nameplate show that max current rating 5 Amps and operate on voltage 230 volts power factor 0.85.
    \[\text{P} = {5\times 230\times \text{0.85}} = 977.5\text{ W} \approx \text{978} \text{ W} \]
  • Therefore, the active power in this calculation is 978 W

  • Three Phase :- If you have a three phase motor it's nameplate show that max current rating 90 Amps and operate on voltage 400 volts power factor 0.85.
    \[\text{P} = {90\times 400\times \text{0.85}} = 53000.75\text{ W} \]
  • Therefore, the active power in this calculation is 53000.75 W
